When Do You Need a Root Canal?

TeamUncategorized

A root canal is a dental procedure that can often save a tooth that is infected or at risk. Most general dentists provide root canal treatment, but an endodontist specializes in root canals, using the latest technology for improved accuracy and comfort.

What is a Root Canal?

A root canal is the chamber inside of a tooth that begins at the base of the crown and extends throughout the root system. The root canal houses the dental pulp, soft tissue containing nerves and blood vessels that help the tooth develop and stay healthy. When the dental pulp is compromised or at risk, root canal treatment can often restore the tooth, allowing it to remain in place in your mouth for many years.

During a root canal the dental pulp is removed from the tooth. The root canal is thoroughly cleaned and disinfected. Then the tooth is filled with a replacement material that mimics dental pulp, but is resistant to infection. In most cases a crown will be placed over the tooth for protection.

Situations That May Require Root Canal Treatment

  • Toothache. A toothache is often a symptom of an infected tooth. When bacteria gets inside a tooth it can infect the dental pulp, resulting in an infection. The inflammation from the infection can cause severe pain. If you experience a persistent toothache, you most likely need root canal treatment.
  • Cracked tooth. A tooth that has a crack, no matter how small, is at risk of infection. Bacteria may enter the tooth through the crack and cause an infection. A cracked tooth will not heal; it will only worsen until it is treated. Root canal treatment complete with a crown will restore and protect the tooth.
  • Deep cavity. A cavity that is deep enough to reach the dentin, the soft layer beneath the enamel, can lead to an infection. The dentin is porous, which allows bacteria to enter and invade the root canal. A tooth with a large cavity may require root canal treatment.
  • Discolored tooth. If you have a tooth that is discolored, it may indicate damage to the dental pulp. If one tooth is darker than the others with a brown or gray color, there may be internal bleeding, which indicates the need for root canal treatment.
  • Dental trauma. A tooth that has been bumped, dislodged, or knocked out of the socket will most likely need root canal treatment. Dental trauma can cause internal damage that may lead to the tooth breaking down from the inside. Root canal treatment can restore the tooth and prevent further damage.

Benefits of Root Canal Treatment

There are many benefits of root canal treatment if your dentist or endodontist recommends it, such as:

  • Relieves pain. During a root canal the nerves are removed from the tooth, eliminating any pain you may feel due to infection.
  • Prevents pain. If your tooth is not infected but at risk, root canal treatment can prevent a painful infection from occuring in the first place.
  • Saves the natural tooth. Root canal treatment can often save your natural tooth, allowing you to chew effectively and maintain your smile.
  • Saves time and money. Saving the natural tooth with a root canal can prevent the need for more costly and time-consuming dental procedures, such as bridges or dental implants.

Frequently Asked Questions About Root Canal Treatment

How do I know if I need a root canal?

If you have any of the common symptoms, such as a toothache or discoloration, you most likely need a root canal. But the only way to know for sure is to see a dentist or endodontist for a professional evaluation.

Is a root canal worth it, or can I have the tooth pulled?

We always recommend restorative procedures to save your natural tooth and keep it in place. Having a tooth pulled leaves a gap in your mouth that can allow other teeth to shift out of place, and replacing a tooth is a more costly and time-consuming procedure.
